My coworker just crashed her 1 month old RAV4, saying the gas was stuck.

This is still a thing, or just Toyota driver?

Toyota driver is the accepted explanation for most incidents involving Toyota’s. At least beige Toyota’s.

Toyota driver. They still fit brakes.

I think the investigation concluded it was 100% driver or floor mat in the case of Toyota. Bummer for her but don’t blame Toyota.

Driver screwing up and then blaming it on the car? Nah, couldn’t be, nobody ever does that.

It is possible the car had an issue. But it would store a fault record of all the data at the time of the accident. Going through that would certainly help to clear things up.

Probably caused by the floor mat. Had it happen on my Acura, I was on the highway though and didn’t crash.

She should have shifted to neutral and stepped on the brake.

Probably floor mats. Which means she could still have a case if dealer installed.

Likely a floor mat as others have pointed out. Happened to me on the highway in my family CRV, I had to reach down and ripped the floor mat up and tossed it in the back seat. I knew something was up because I took my foot off the gas to brake and the car started speeding up.

People who drive only automatics - which I presume this car was if it was in the US - often don’t know what neutral is. They only ever use P, R or D and never have any occasion to use the mysterious N and don’t have the kind of knowledge that would enable them to work out logically what to do.

This. Not a Toyota fan-boy but they were skewered unfairly in the media.

Tell your coworker the brake pedal is the one to the left of the gas pedal at the extreme right.
